ARCHIVED - Cartagena demands the permanent reopening of Rosell Hospital wards
More facilities at the Rosell would take the pressure off the saturated Santa Lucía in Cartagena
The Platform for the Defence of Public Health in the Region of Murcia has railed against the flood of patients crowding the emergency department of the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena and has demanded the “permanent” reopening of several closed wards of the nearby Santa María del Rosell Hospital to deal with the overflow.
As it stands, countless patients have to wait for hours before they are seen to or admitted, and the regional health authorities have already conceded to opening ward 3C in the Rosell to cater to the influx of new Covid patients. The new floor will be able to treat 16 people at a time, and a total of 20 additional staff have been hired.
The debate over the function of the Rosell has been raging for decade, when the ministry began to move its services to the newly built Santa Lucía, located 5 miles away. Public outcry led to the Rosell’s emergency department remaining open, and the tide of popular opinion appears to be turning in this direction once more.
Spokesperson for the Platform, Julián Víctor del Pozo, has strongly urged the government not to wait until the health system is in collapse but to recognise that the Santa Lucía Hospital has reached saturation point, and open the unused wards in the Rosell to accommodate more patients in the coastal municipality.
The proposal to reopen hospital floors would also increase the number of surgical interventions that could be carried out and reduce wait times for important procedures.
“If they were enabled and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) open, more operations could be carried out and waiting lists reduced,” Mr Del Pozo added.
The Platform also recommends extending the opening hours of the emergency services in the health centres, which it believes would encourage patients to go to their local facilities rather than further saturating the already over-burdened hospitals.
Mr Del Pozo also demanded the need for councillor Juan José Pedreño to convene the Regional Health Council, to deal with the problems that exist in Primary Care. The last time the members held a meeting was on February 6, 2018.
