Cartagena bus station makeover to begin within weeks as major revamp gets green light

Travellers can expect easier access, new facilities and a fresh look as the long-awaited renovation moves ahead this year

Cartagena’s ageing bus station is finally set for a major facelift, with work expected to begin within the next month after the Ayuntamiento awarded the renovation contract to local company MGM.

The project, worth €316,128.20 plus VAT, will completely reorganise how passengers move through the station, bringing all traveller services down to street level and making the building much easier to use, particularly for people with reduced mobility.

The long-awaited renovation follows earlier plans announced this spring to modernise the station for the first time in almost 30 years.

Mayor Noelia Arroyo said the changes would make journeys “more comfortable and accessible” while also giving a new purpose to the building’s largely unused upper floor.

“We want those almost 2,400 square metres available to be at the service of university students,” she explained. “That’s why we are already working with the rector of the UPCT to transfer that entire floor to the university.”

At the moment, passengers must enter the station at first-floor level before heading back downstairs to reach the bus platforms, something many travellers have long found awkward and inconvenient. Under the new design, a brand-new pedestrian entrance will be created directly at street level.

The updated station will include:

A new main lobby with ticket sales and information points
A café with an outdoor terrace
Easier access to the bus bays via an accessible ramp
A raised pedestrian crossing connecting directly to the platforms
Refurbished toilets adapted to modern accessibility standards
Improved paving and waiting areas outside the building
Redesigned vehicle access with two traffic lanes

The works will also include electrical upgrades, repairs to structural defects and improvements to water and drainage systems connected to the new café area.

According to municipal forecasts, the renovation should take around five months once work begins, meaning the project is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

The station, built in 1995, has shown increasing signs of wear in recent years, with broken escalators, graffiti and vandalised facilities becoming a familiar sight for regular users.

MGM, based in La Aljorra, continues to strengthen its presence in Cartagena after securing several major local contracts in recent months, including projects linked to Parque Torres and the Roman Amphitheatre.

For many residents and visitors alike, the renovation marks a long-overdue upgrade to one of Cartagena’s main transport gateways.
