ARCHIVED - Butane gas canister price rises to 13.37 euros on Tuesday
Another increase of almost 5 per cent just when people need heating most!
As so often seems to be the case the latest two-monthly price review for the butane gas canisters which are used to provide heating in millions of homes throughout Spain rises on Tuesday, just as Storm Gloria is ensuring that the need for warmth is as great as ever in many parts of the country.
The latest price hike amounts to 63 cents, bringing the maximum permitted sale price for normal canisters of 12.5 kilos up to 13.37 euros. At 4.95 per cent the latest increase is marginally lower than the maximum permitted within the established review system, and is reportedly due mainly to the increasing cost of raw materials (up by 12.6 per cent in the last two months) and transport.
Despite this, though the new price of canisters as of Tuesday is still 1.20 euros (or 8.2 per cent) cheaper than at the same time in 2019, and will remain in force until the third Tuesday of March.
Maybe by then the need for heating will have receded in many parts of Spain and spring weather will make stoves and radiators redundant!
When the bi-monthly review process was introduced in 2014 the price being paid across Spain was 17.50 euros for each canister of butane, but by July 2017 the figure had fallen dramatically to 11.27€. However, it then bounced back to 14.89 euros in July 2018 and had been falling ever since before the review in November of last year, when there would have been a 12 per cent rise if the 5% cap had not been introduced five years ago.
