ARCHIVED - British strain of Covid is now predominant in Andalusia
The Kent variant of the virus has now entirely replaced the original "Wuhan strain" in the Spanish region of Andalusia.
The original strain of Covid-19 has now disappeared entirely from Andalusia, and the British or Kent variant is predominant, the regional health councillor for Andalucía, Jesús Aguirre has reported, and that is, unfortunately he says, leading to more patients ending up in intensive care.
Sr. Aguirre spoke to the press on Monday while opening a new 3-million-euro health centre in Gibraleón, Huelva, and said he preferred not to refer to the rise in incidence rates as a fourth wave, but rather as “a period of upward movement within the plateau phase we have had in the last few days.”
However, he explained, there is a marked difference between the current situation and previous waves of the virus where hospitalisations are concerned. Whereas before, the ward to ICU ratio of coronavirus patients was 85 per cent to 15 per cent, it is now 80 per cent to 20 per cent.
That, the health department leader said, is due not only to the fact that the British variant of the virus is more virulent than the original one but also to the fact that as the vaccination campaign progresses among the elderly, the majority of those catching the virus are now younger and take longer to seek medical attention.
Whereas older members of the public are quicker to realise that they are short of breath and their oxygen levels are dropping, younger patients take longer to seek attention and are in worse condition when they do, often meaning they need to be taken straight into intensive care.
The vaccination campaign is contributing to a significant reduction in the number of new cases amongst the elderly, and outbreaks in care homes and residencies are now almost non-existent due to the success of the vaccine programme.
There were 1,473 coronavirus patients in Andalusian hospitals on Tuesday morning (13 April), 297 of them in ICUs. Although the hospitalisation figures are creeping upwards, they remain well below the peaks registered during the first wave of the virus, 2,708 on 30 March 2020; the second, 3,478 on 10 November 2020; and the third, 4,980 on 2 February this year.
