ARCHIVED - Bittersweet delivery of much-needed vehicle for MABS Cancer Foundation
This volunteer-run charity provides support for cancer patients right through the year and across the region.
MABS provides a superb respite facility for cancer patients and their carers in the Murcia region, run entirely by volunteers and funded by donations as well as helping dozens of people through their personal cancer journeys every day of the year.
Every charity working in this region needs support right now, as Covid has hit all of them really hard. With shops closed and fundraising events cancelled, but overheads remaining the same as animal and human needs simply don´t recognise Covid and lockdowns, they all need volunteers to help them through this difficult time and funds to help them continue their work.
If you have a few hours, or a few euros to spare, they’d be very happy to hear from you.
Please note; the MABS Information Centre on Camposol will be operating reduced hours during August:
Monday to Friday 10:00 to 12:00.
To contact MABS outside of these hours call 618 582 418 or 620 422 410.
A message from MABS:
As many of you know MABS Costa Calida opened their Respite Home in April 2018 to provide Respite, Rehabilitation and End of Life care to those diagnosed with cancer.
Since then we have provided 24 hours care to over 30 patients from around the region.
Caring for the very sick is stressful and emotional but last year we began to experience difficulties in obtaining suitable transport for patients needing to come into our Home and after one particularly difficult situation a decision was made to try to purchase a vehicle that could resolve these problems.
In March we found the perfect vehicle, made the order and paid the 50% deposit for the adaptations to commence……..then 3 days later Spain entered the State of Emergency and our income stopped abruptly as our shops were closed and our fundraising events were cancelled. We tried to cancel the order but it was too late…….we were committed to the deal.
During the Lockdown period we admitted 5 patients into the Home each receiving the 24 hour specialist care they needed and we continued to provide the day to day support we had always done to the 200 people in the Murcia area, including 3 people who were unable to get back to the UK due to the border closures.
After Lockdown was relaxed we all breathed a huge sigh of relief as our shops reopened and our fundraising events could begin again. That was until the 23rd when Totana was placed back into Phase 1 and our charity shop in the town was closed yet again. Thankfully, our charity shop in San Javier is remains open.
On Thursday 30th July we eventually took delivery of this fantastic adapted vehicle that will be so useful to our regular patients who have mobility problems and those who need the extra support in our Respite Home. It was a bitter sweet moment when we received the car because we needed the vehicle to improve our services but the cost would have helped us through this awful time but we are delighted to have it at our disposal and we know that the benefit it will bring far outweighs the stress it´s purchase caused us.
Yes, our finances are being stretched to the limit at the moment as we find ourselves helping more and more people who have been diagnosed with cancer but in these uneasy times all charities are struggling.
We are incredibly grateful that we have had your support in the past that allowed us to make this wonderful purchase and we sincerely hope that you will continue to support us in the future. If you would like to know more about how you can become part of our teams in Mazarron; San Javier or Calasparra or if you would like to organise a fundraising event for us please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator Jan mazvolunteers@mabscancerfoundation.com or call 634 362 954.
Thank you, take care and stay safe

MABS Mazarrón provides care and support for all those touched by the hand of cancer in the south-west of the Murcia region. Volunteers provide a wide range of services to help those who are undergoing treatment for cancer in a multitude of practical ways, helping with both the physical and the mental challenges of dealing with cancer. The group operates from a cancer centre on the Camposol urbanisation, and fundraises from its shop in Totana, as well as receiving donations from businesses and individuals who support MABS with a wide range of fundraising activities.
Cancer Support Foundation (MABS) is a registered charitable foundation and is funded via donations and fundraising activities within the local community in Spain. They are a strictly non- profit making group who rely totally on donations and fundraising events, MABS does not receive any financial assistance from local or regional governments. All funds raised by the Mazarrón group remain in the Mazarrón area and are used to help local people at this very difficult time in their lives.
The Cancer Support Group (MABS) Mazarrón offer:-
Transport to and from hospital/clinic appointments
Translators
Patient escorts to hospital and clinic appointments
Support and befriending to patients and their families

They always need Volunteers
Do you have some time on your hands? Could you offer friendship and support to someone in need? Could you take a cancer patient to the hospital for treatment or a consultant’s appointment? Could you do some light housework or ironing? Could you walk a patient’s dog? Could you do some shopping or collect a prescription for a patient? Are you fluent in Spanish and able to help with spoken and written translations?
If you said ‘Yes’ to any of these questions then you could become a volunteer for Cancer Support Foundation (Mabs) Mazarrón. There are no special skills necessary to become a volunteer, just a desire to help those less fortunate than ourselves. The group have volunteers from all backgrounds, some whose lives have been touched by cancer others who have not. Initial training is provided and ongoing support is available to all volunteers.
WHATEVER YOUR SKILLS - THEY NEED YOU!
