ARCHIVED - AVE high-speed rail network to reach Orihuela by the spring
Services approach the Region as the AVE is on schedule to reach Murcia in 2021
Little by little Spain’s AVE high-speed rail network is approaching the city of Murcia after a series of delays which has resulted in the arrival of the first trains being postponed for over 5 years, and the national Ministry of Development is now anticipating that the line to Elche and Orihuela will be ready to come into service by April of May 2020.
This will leave the network within just a few kilometres of Murcia while work to create underground tracks leading into the city is completed, one of the projects which has lengthened the delays as residents in the south of the city protested at the way in which the works project “cut them off” from the rest of the regional capital.
At the same time, the current rate of progress leads to expectations that the first AVE trains in Murcia will finally be seen during 2021, but in the meantime in just a few months there will be an operational AVE station just a short drive from the city in the neighbouring province of Alicante.
Testing has been under way on the Elche and Orihuela line since the start of this year but the process is a lengthy one as the most sophisticated rail traffic management systems and protocols available are being installed, and it has been necessary to contract privately owned companies. During the last few months rail management company Adif’s “laboratory train” has been involved in speed tests to calibrate signalling and other equipment, and while the line will be ready to be put in service as far as Beniel, on the boundary between Murcia and Alicante, the station there will not be included as trains from Monforte del Cid stop short of the Region of Murcia.
When it is complete the line from Monforte del Cid to Murcia will include various stretches where the lie of the land makes it impossible to exceed a speed limit of 250 km/h, but this will still be fast enough to reduce journey times to Madrid significantly! When trains and drivers are all in place tickets will be placed on sale around two months before the first service.
