Atlantic storm to ring in 2026: Spain weather forecast Dec 29-Jan 4
Settled conditions early in the week will give way to a wet and windy New Year weekend across Spain

Weather outlook on Thursday January 1, New Year’s Day
After a weekend of torrential rain across much of the Mediterranean coast, the weather will stabilise somewhat during the final days of 2025. Although isolated showers will still occur along the eastern and southern coasts of Spain and the Balearic Islands on Monday December 29, high pressure will arrive to settle the weather for a couple of days.

Weather outlook on Monday December 29
Tuesday December 30 promises to be a more pleasant day as high pressure will dominate with widespread low cloud, mist and fog across inland areas. These conditions will generally clear through the day leaving clearer skies. Temperatures will drop in areas where fog persists, with little change elsewhere.

Weather outlook on Tuesday December 30
On New Year’s Eve, Wednesday December 31, the settled conditions will continue with similar fog and mist problems, especially persistent across the central plateaus. Skies will clear as the day progresses. Temperatures will fall across most of Spain, with the most significant drops in northeastern regions.

Weather outlook on Wednesday December 31
Sadly though, the tranquil midweek conditions won't last long. On Thursday January 1, the first weather front of 2026 will reach the Canary Islands, bringing rain that will spread from west to east throughout Friday January 2. This front, driven by a low-pressure system, will arrive in western Spain late on Friday.

Weather outlook on Friday January 2
Its impact will be felt most strongly across western regions during the New Year weekend, with Saturday January 3 and Sunday January 4 seeing the worst of the conditions.

Weather outlook on Saturday January 3
By Sunday, the heaviest rainfall will have fallen across western Spain and the Canary Islands. The Mediterranean, which bore the brunt of last weekend's downpours, will see mainly dry conditions after Sunday, although some scattered showers will persist throughout the week.

Weather outlook on Sunday January 4
Temperature-wise, the week will start cold with hard frosts expected in many areas overnight as clear skies allow heat to escape. Daytime highs will struggle to climb above 10°C to 15°C in most parts, although the Canary Islands will enjoy milder conditions above 20°C.
As the storm arrives for the New Year weekend, temperatures will rise slightly thanks to milder Atlantic winds from the west and southwest, but the combination of cloud, rain and wind will make conditions feel rather unpleasant.
Snow will fall in mountainous areas throughout the period, with the snow level rising to between 1,600 and 1,900 metres by the weekend as milder Atlantic air moves in.
