ARCHIVED - The port of Cartagena makes land available to complete a cycle lane to the Navidad lighthouse
The cycling route will be extended to run from Cala Cortina to the Fuerte de Navidad
An agreement has been reached between the Ministry of Defence and the Port Authority of Cartagena by which the military will relinquish an area of 78,000 metres of land and make it accessible to the public in the area of El Espalmador, making it possible for a cycle lane which has already been opened between the city centre and the beach of Cala Cortina to extend all the way to the lighthouse of Navidad on the western side of the entrance to the natural harbour.
The maritime rescue service base which is currently located alongside the docks of San Pedro and Santa Lucía is to be re-located to El Espalmador in order to make space on the seafront, and other work to be carried out at an estimated cost of 400,000 euros in order to improve access to the Fuerte de Navidad and the lighthouse alongside includes widening the road.
Meanwhile, Yolanda Muñoz, the president of the Port Authority, explains that work is still on-going on the “Plaza Mayor” project which aims to concert parts of the port into public meeting areas for both locals and tourists, and proposals are welcomed regarding specific ideas of how this would best be achieved.
