ARCHIVED - Sunday 17th November; Horses and carriages in central Cartagena
Around 150 people and 50 horses accompany the historical carriages in this event
On Sunday 17th November the port area of Cartagena, the Puerto de Cartagena, is the venue for an event celebrating the rural traditions of horses and carriages, with 30 carriages from different areas of Spain participating in the III Concurso Nacional de Enganches de Tradición de Cartagena. Around 150 people and 50 horses will be accompanying the various carriages, some of them centuries old, according to the organisers, and all fully restored.
The event is being organised by the Club de Enganches de Cartagena Asociación Cultural Auriga.
There are two parts to the events on Sunday:
At 11:00 in the Paseo del Puerto de Cartagena, the carriages will be lined up to receive the critical appraisal of the judges, awarding prizes to those considered to be the best in their class.
After this, the horses and carriages will be driven to the Cuesta del Batel (the large area of grass at the foot of the wall which surrounds this area of the city, in the space used for the battle during the Romans and Carthaginians Fiestas). Once at the Cuesta del Batel they will participate in a series of carriage driving competitions, one of which is specifically for the type of vehicle traditionally used in the campo de Cartagena countryside areas prior to the invention of motorised transport.
Spectators are very welcome to come along and see this more sedate form of transport. (It’s also worth pointing out that nearby alongside the el Batel auditorium a road race of classic motorcycles is also taking place on the same morning.
