ARCHIVED - One dead as almost 200 migrants are intercepted off the coast of Murcia and Alicante
A new wave of migrants crossed the Mediterranean from Algeria over the weekend
As another wave of unauthorized migrants attempted to make their way into EU territory over the weekend via the coastlines of the Region of Murcia and the province of Alicante, it is reported by the emergency and rescue services that the dead body of one of them was picked up and brought ashore in the port of Cartagena.
The identity of the victim has not been established but it is believed that he may have lost his life during a crossing a few days earlier than the 140 people who were intercepted in the Mediterranean on Sunday.
It is not uncommon for the autumn to see an upturn in the number of people making this hazardous crossing, and while 47 people had been intercepted off the Costa Cálida and the southern Costa Blanca by Sunday morning during the afternoon and evening the figure was swollen by another 93, occupying a number of small boats onto which it is assumed that they had been distributed from a larger vessel to complete the last leg of their journey. Add to these another 57 who failed to make it ashore undetected on Saturday and the total for the weekend comes to 197.
Of the 47 who were detected on Sunday morning 29 were on board two boats close to the municipality of Orihuela, 8 in Altea and 10 close to the city of Alicante. All of those brought ashore alive over the weekend have given their nationality as Algerian.
With sea conditions calm, the weather set fair for the rest of the week and a new moon due on Monday morning the authorities are prepared for more boats over the next few days and nights.
