ARCHIVED - Murcia health service asks to use military premises in Cartagena as a coronavirus overflow hospital
The help of the army is requested to create an overflow field hospital next to the Arrixaca in El Palmar
The Department of Health in the regional government of Murcia has made an official request that buildings owned by the military in Cartagena be made available to house coronavirus patients, as well as asking for help from the army in establishing a temporary field hospital outside the busy Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar.
The request lodged with the central government delegate to the Region, José Vélez, specifies the use of the Spanish navy’s infantry school in Cartagena, named after General Albacete Fuster in Tentegorra, on the western outskirts of Cartagena. The request has been passed on to the relevant military authorities as a matter of urgency in order to allow regional government officials to inspect the premises and to assess their possible use: if this is deemed feasible, it could be used to provide care for patients with mild symptoms if overflow facilities are required at the main hospitals of Cartagena, the Santa Lucía and the Rosell.
If the building is not considered appropriate the intention is to find another one for the same purpose.
At the Arrixaca hospital just outside the city of Murcia, meanwhile, the aim is to provide a different kind of overflow facility, again as a contingency plan in case the main hospital is unable to cope with the expected increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the regional capital.
The death of an 85-year-old man in Murcia brought the total of fatalities in the Region due to the coronavirus up to 345, with another 23 patients in intensive care. The pandemic arrived in Murcia later than in any other region in Spain, and so far only one patient has been given the all-clear since the first case was reported a fortnight ago.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
