ARCHIVED - Mazarrón Town Hall searches for Camposol flooding solution
The Mayor and technicians are studying the possible courses of action open to them
Work to clear up the debris left behind after the downpour on Camposol has been a huge job, and although residents have been quick to praise the efforts of the Town Hall and all the volunteers who put so much work into helping those affected by the disaster, Mayor Francisco García, ( PSOE) fully aware of the inconvenience suffered by residents, has said that the council is to investigate possible solutions which might be implemented in order to avoid similar disasters on the development in the future.
The bulk of the rubble has gone, but the mud remains, and council workers from various Town Hall departments continue to remove the flaking layer which still covers the tarmac in many places. This week the Mayor has again visited Camposol, assuring local residents that investigations will be made into the possibility of carrying out work at the head of the rambla which overflowed in September in order to reduce the possibility of similar floods in future, even though the sector has still not been adopted by the council due to the ongoing issues with absentee developer Masa.
Next week Town Hall staff will begin weighing up various possible courses of action, and when the most feasible has been decided on it will be discussed with the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura to decide how best to proceed.
The current Mayor has inherited the whole issue of Camposol from his predecessor Ginés Campillo ( Independent party) who held power for 3 years due to a power sharing arrangement made following the last local elections, who, in turn, had picked up the reins after Francisco Blaya Blaya ( PP) who was at the head of the council when Camposol was built.
The problems on this part of D Sector are well documented, and are mainly caused by the work undertaken by developer Masa, who filled in a rambla to build houses over the top, and failed to create a large enough water pipe through the centre to cope with this volume of water. Former Mayor Blaya Blaya maintains that his planning department were unaware of the actions being undertaken by Masa to illegally build homes over the top of an infilled rambla.
