ARCHIVED - 19th-century cannon restored at the Fuerte de Navidad in Cartagena
The Navidad fortress stands on the western side of the entrance to the bay of Cartagena
Restoration work has been completed on the cannon of the Fuerte de Navidad, the 18th-century fortress which stands at the mouth of the natural harbour of Cartagena.
The first stage of the restoration involved a thorough cleaning of the cannon, including the removal by both chemical and mechanical means of layers of paint which have been applied over the years. This long and gradual process was followed by series of actions to reinforce and strengthen the piece, sealing cracks and then applying protective coatings.
The Fuerte de Navidad was originally built after cannon were introduced into military strategy in the 16th century, making it necessary to create a new kind of defensive network to protect Cartagena against attacks from the sea. When the port became a permanent base for the Spanish fleet this prompted the construction of a series of artillery batteries of which the Fuerte de Navidad, on the western side of the entrance to the bay, was one.
