ARCHIVED - 19th to 22nd March, holiday weekend activities at the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena
Fun ways to learn about the Roman city of Carthago Nova for children of all ages!
The Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena is at the hub of a series of special activities being held over the long holiday weekend of 19th to 22nd March, when the regional holiday of San José on the 19th will be made into a “bridge” by many people (ie many will choose to take a long weekend off work!).
Most of the activities planned are designed to appeal to a younger audience but all of them aim to inform about the historical and cultural heritage of Cartagena, with gastronomic tastings and virtual enhanced reality goggles adding to the attractiveness of the events.
Please note, all tours are in Spanish, although an English language audioguide is available at the museums included in the tours for general visits.
19th March – “Romanos por el mundo: destino Carthago Nova”.
This dramatized tour begins at 12.00 at the Roman Museum Theatre as a journalist interviews various different personalities from the Roman Empire who have come to the city of Carthago Nova to seek fame and fortune in the theatre and the Forum.
Registration is priced at 14 euros (7 euros for members of Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas).
20th March - “Ciudadanos de un Imperio”
A guided tour beginning at 11.30 at the Roman Theatre Museum, taking in the most important Roman remains in the city and explaining them from the point of view of the “man in the street” of Carthago Nocva 2,000 years ago. As well as the theatre, the tour includes the thermal baths, temples and private residences, one of them beautifully decorated with paintings and mosaics.
Registration is priced at 13 euros (10 euros reduced rate for children aged 12 and under, 6.50 euros for members of Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas).
21st March - “Cartagena, sabor tres culturas”
This popular tour starts at 11.30 at the foot of the panoramic lift, and first goes up to the Castillo de la Concepción at the top of the hill which was the centre of the city in the 13th century before descending to the Roman Theatre, the church of Santa María la Vieja and the theatre museum. Participants end the morning with a small bite to eat based on medieval recipes!
Registration is priced at 13 euros (10 euros reduced rate for children aged 12 and under, 6.50 euros for members of Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas).
22nd March - “Carthago Nova 2.0”
This visit also begins at 11.30 at the Roman Theatre Museum and visits the most important sites belonging to the Roman city of Carthago Nova, including the theatre and the Forum District. By using tablets and virtual reality goggles, participants can see the monuments as they were in their heyday.
Registration is priced at 15 euros.
At the same time, an exhibition entitled “Plastihistoria de la Humanidad” is being held at the Castillo de la Concepción, featuring plasticine models related to characters from the 3,000-year history of Cartagena, and on 19th and 22nd March at 12.00 a special activity is being held as explorer Teo Jones guides children on an adventure to discover the mystery concealed by the ancient stones of the castle. Registration for this activity is priced at 8 euros (4 euros for members of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas)
Also at the Castillo de la Concepción, on 21st March a children’s party is being held at 12.00: admission 6 euros (3 euros for members of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas) including the ride up to the castle in the panoramic lift.
