ARCHIVED - 100,000 euros to restore part of the bombed-out Cathedral in Cartagena
Work is underway to restore the Council Chapel, also known as the Chapel of the Four Saints, in the former Cathedral of Cartagena, with a budget of 100,000 euros. La Capilla del Concejo, is owned by the municipality, and has lain in a state of ruin since the Civil war.
The remains of the former Cathedral are located alongside the Roman Theatre.
Popular legend maintains that the Catedral Vieja de Santa María is built on the location of the first church founded by the Apostle Saint James (Santiago), who landed in Cartagena in the early part of the 1st century AD on his mission to spread Christianity throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
Parts of what remains of the cathedral were built in the 14th century, but significant rebuilding work was undertaken in the 16th century and included the Capilla de los Cuatro Santos. A century later the Capilla del Cristo del Socorro was added, and the building was completely remodelled and restored in 1902. Sadly, though, during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 the Cathedral was virtually destroyed by the aerial bombardments to which the city was subjected.
