ARCHIVED - Antique porcelain thieves arrested in Mula in Operation Fragile!
Almost 400 porcelain pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries were recovered by the Guardia Civil
Two men aged 60 and 52, both with extensive previous criminal records, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia after an investigation codenamed “Operación Fragile” in connection with the theft of almost 400 very valuable items of porcelain dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The investigation began when it came to the attention of the Guardia that the two men were attempting to sell the antique porcelain on the black market, and at the same time the owners of a property in La Puebla de Mula reported that three antique dinner services had been stolen. The porcelain, made by La Cartuja in Sevilla, was a family legacy and carried great sentimental value as well as being worth a lot of money, and a hole had been made in the wall of the house by the thieves before they made off with their loot while the owners were not at home.
Immediately the incident was connected with the two individuals selling porcelain, also resident in La Puebla de Mula, and a search of their home resulted in the recovery of almost all of the missing pieces.
The case is now in the hands of the courts of Mula while investigations continue into other objects found during the search in order to establish whether they too were stolen.
