ARCHIVED - Andalucia travel agents given tour of Almeria attractions to encourage domestic tourism
Almería provincial council and Turismo Andaluz have welcomed representatives from nine Andalusian travel agencies to show off the area’s charms and encourage visits.
There is no doubt that the last year has been brutally hard for the travel and tourism sector and with significant uncertainty pervading about summer travel, the domestic market is being viewed as the most likely source of immediate revenue in the coming months.
There are just under 47 million inhabitants of Spain, and encouraging domestic tourism is a high priority for the Spanish tourism board this summer, with most Spaniards expected to take staycations rather than attempt to travel abroad. There are 8.4 million residents in the region of Andalucía alone, which covers nearly 18 per cent of the total area of Spain, with 87,000 square kilometres of varied scenery, beaches and interesting monuments and so encouraging travel just within this vast region alone is a logical course to follow.
Representatives from six travel agencies in Málaga and three in Granada have been on a ‘fam trip’ to the inland area of the Almería coast this week to learn more about its attractions with a view to selling more holidays in the area in the future.
The trip was organized by the Almeria provincial authorities and Turismo Andaluz and followed an intense itinerary through Almería, Níjar, Sorbas and Lucainena de las Torres. Activities included visits to information centres in Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, hiking, horse-riding in Minas de Rodalquilar, mountain biking and caving in the Sorbas gypsum karsts as well as visits to museums, monuments and archaeological sites.
The tourism authorities are working hard supporting this type of initiative to promote the destination as a great place to visit at any time of year as Almeria has something for everyone to enjoy in all seasons, and making travel agents aware of this is a crucial part of boosting long-term visitor numbers.
