ARCHIVED - All non-essential businesses to close from 20.00 in the Region of Murcia
The regional Government expects hospitalisations to reach 1,000 within a few days
The Covid Monitoring Committee meeting of the Region of Murcia health authority on Monday held little in the way of surprises:
Every municipality except Aledo and Librilla are now in the category of “extremely high” transmission levels and are confined, with all of their bars and restaurants closed from midnight on Tuesday onwards.
This means that residents from every other municipality must remain within the borders of their home municipality and may not enter another municipality other than for essential reasons, or going to work.
In addition, all businesses considered non-essential, must close by 20:00 (8pm) in the evening.Only services such as supermarkets, pharmacies, petrol stations, veterinary centers, food delivery services, soup kitchens and wholesale trade suppliers will be permitted to continue trading. Businesses which offer a delivery service will be permitted to prepare deliveries behind locked doors.
All other businesses such as retailers, gyms and cinemas must be closed by eight o'clock.
The Covid Monitoring Committee says that this measure is intended to restrict the mobility of the entire population to limit the impact of the third wave of the pandemic.
This new regulation will take effect from next Wednesday (midnight on Tuesday).
''We are facing an almost emergency situation. We have to stay home. This is the most effective measure if we want to reduce infections in these difficult times, "said the regional Health Minister, Manuel Villegas. The situation in the Region is "critical", he said, explaining that if the rate of hospitalisations continues to increase at its current rate, admissions will reach 1,000 in the next few days, a level which will severely pressure the resources available in the region, even with all contingency plans put into motion.
The regional president has written to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, requesting that the curfew be brought forward to 20:00 and that the regional governments be given the power to impose full confinements (lockdowns) on municipalities in which the rate of contagions is particularly high.
