Date Published: 27/09/2023ARCHIVED ARTICLE -Alicante invites Carthaginians and Romans to join the Moors and Christians celebrations in December
The news comes after an Alicante delegation opened the iconic Cartagena parade last weekend
Two hundred Moors and Christians of Alicante, together with two music bands performing their traditional marches, took pride of place at one of the Region of Murcia’s best loved celebrations and led the great parade of the Carthaginians and Romans fiesta on Saturday September 23.The unique twinning of these two important historic festivities has been mirrored by Alicante and the City Council has invited the Cartagena team to lead the opening ceremony of the December 6 event.“It would be a correct way to correspond to the huge welcome that the Alicante delegation has received in Cartagena. Furthermore, I am sure that this representation of Carthaginians and Romans would be surprising, which will result in the promotion of both celebrations,” explained the Alicante Councillor for Festivals, Cristina Cutanda, before the start of the Grand Parade in Cartagena. The Alicante representatives enjoyed an action-packed few days in Murcia, which began with a reception at the Cartagena Town Hall. After the parade, the group was taken on several excursions to the Port of Cartagena and the Roman Theatre.According to Councillor Cutanda, the twinning initiative is aimed “at promoting the history and culture of two cities that feel like sisters and that share history.”President of the Moors and Christians association of Alicante, Juan de Dios Bermúdez, added that both localities share a “common objective” by uniting both festivals “which is to enhance culture and traditions”.Now read: Cartagena voted best-value place in Spain for foreigners to live
