article_detailDate Published: 14/05/2020ARCHIVED ARTICLEARCHIVED - Águilas, Lorca, Puerto Lumbreras and Mazarrón re-open weekly street markets
The south-west of the region resumes trading at weekly markets
All have a limited number of stands, entry will be controlled and strict hygiene measures enforced
Slowly, slowly street markets are re-opening, albeit with a maximum of 25% of the stalls and with strict hygiene measures in place. In both Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca only food stalls will be open initially, whereas Águilas will allow plants and refreshments alongside the fresh produce and as the de-escalation process progresses, further stalls will be permitted to open as well.At the moment temperature controls are being taken by Protección Civíl, as they are in other areas of the region, and clients are asked to wear masks, gloves and use handwash. Clients are asked to shop “solo” and wait in a queue to be served by the stallholders, observing social distancing.Clients are not allowed to touch the produce. In Águilas entry to the market area is being strictly controlled by a numbering system to ensure that distancing is observed. It’s a far cry from the normal scrum which makes market shopping such an enjoyable way to spend a morning, but at least it’s an opportunity to buy fresh produce which isn´t pre-packed into plastic trays and support local businesses!Águilas: SaturdayAguilas holds its weekly market on a Saturday morning in and around Calle Murcia in the northern outskirts of the town, "outside" the ring road, opening for the first time on the 16th May.
Lorca: ThursdayLorca is opening its weekly market on Thursdays from 14th May which is located in the Huerto de La Rueda on the outskirts of the city from 08:00 to 14:00. Other markets in the outlying districts will not open immediately, the intention of the council being to review this as the de-escalation moves into its second phase.Puerto Lumbreras Friday and SundayPuerto Lumbreras has two markets, one on a Friday in Puerto Lumbreras itself alongside the rambla and a second in La Estación-El Esparragal on Sunday. These are open from 08:00 to 13:00 with maximum capacity of 200 people.Mazarrón town: SaturdayThe Mazarrón market takes place on Saturday mornings between 8.00 and 14.00 in the Plaza del Convento, in front of the Parroquía de la Purísima (click the link for map)
Puerto de Mazarrón: Sunday
The Puerto de Mazarrón market which is held on Sunday mornings is located in the Urbanización Bahía next to the municipal tennis and padel tennis courts, and is again open from 8.00 to 14.00.
