ARCHIVED - Águilas and San Pedro del Pinatar promote the Recicla Esperanza glass recycling campaign
741 tons of glass were collected for recycling in Águilas last year
Águilas and San Pedro del Pinatar are among the municipalities taking part in a new glass recycling campaign entitled “Recicla Esperanza” (Recycle Hope), which combines the need to combat climate change with the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
The campaign is organized by the non-profit-making organization Ecovidrio and highlights various schemes which have been introduced during the pandemic, the aim being to tap into the sense of concern caused by coronavirus in order to promote recycling practices. Residents of all 45 municipalities of Murcia are invited to submit their ideas for glass recycling initiatives to the website www.reciclaesperanza.es between now and the end of May, and voting will then be opened during June for members of the public to decide on their favourite, with cash prizes available for the three winners.
In the meantime, 45 of the green glass collection “igloos” are to be installed throughout the Region bearing the official design decided on by Ecovidrio.
Last year in Águilas alone 741 tons of glass were deposited in the special green bins, averaging out at 20.8 kilos per inhabitant, and in the Region of Murcia the recycling of glass equated to the emission of 16,506 tons less CO2 into the atmosphere.
In San Pedro del Pinatar, meanwhile, the figures show a total of 451 tons of glass waste at an average rate of 17.4 kilos per inhabitant.
