ARCHIVED - Aemet issues yellow alert for rain in Mazarron and the Campo de Cartagena on Saturday and Sunday
This area extends from Mazarrón all the way around the Mar Menor and into Torre Pacheco.
State meteorological agency Aemet has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains, starting at 22:00 on Saturday evening and concluding at 15:00 on Sunday afternoon.
The agency is warning that sustained heavy rain could accumulate to up to 60 litres per square metre (60mm) during a 12 hour period and has given a 40-70 per cent probability for this level of precipitation.
As is normal in these situations, heavy rainfall can be highly localised and the normal warnings relating to ramblas and riverbeds apply; these run down from the interior to the coast, joining with other dry waterways on their journey and can be extremely dangerous, as the accumulated water can rush down seemingly from nowhere into an area where there is no rainfall. So be extremely careful about crossing these “dry” waterways and if it is raining heavily, avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
Generalised rainfall is expected elsewhere with temperatures remaining at comfortable levels.
Hopefully it will brighten up once this patch of bad weather has passed and we can catch up with the washing!
