ARCHIVED - 95 per cent decrease in Spanish hotel occupancy during June
The tourism sector is under no illusions that this will be a complicated summer
Earlier this week the Spanish Tourism Sector published its prediction that the sector would lose 40 billion euros worth of income during the summer this year and the figures published on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE) relating to hotel occupancy in June would appear to support the initial forecast.
Overnight stays in hotels across Spain fell 95.1% in June, as compared with the same month of 2019, to 1.82 million, compared to more than 37 million a year earlier, while the number of travellers staying in hotel establishments was 920,778 , less than 10% of those registered in the same period of the previous year.
According to the monthly survey of hotel establishments by the National Statistics Institute (INE) the number of rooms avaialbale was very low, due to the prolongation of the state of emergency until June 21st.
Although the state of emergency ended on June 21st and mobility resumed throughout the country, the limitations of the first three weeks meant that only 5,896 of the almost 20,000 existing hotels in Spain were opened, 64.6% less than a year ago, offering just 322,508 places (17.6% of the total).
The fall in June adds to the 99.2% decrease in May, when just 1,567 hotels opened across the country. In April there was no hotel activity and in March, with the start of the state of alarm on March 14th, overnight stays had fallen by 61.1%.
Borders with Schengen countries were opened from June 21st (except with Portugal, on July 1st): overnight stays by residents of Spain decreased by 87% , up to 1.5 million, and those of non-residents fell 98.8%, with just over 310,000.
