ARCHIVED - 7 top sailing teams booked in for training in the Mar Menor this winter
The Alinghi team which has won the America’s Cup twice arrives in Lo Pagán this week
The ideal conditions for sailing in the Mar Menor during the winter have led to as many as seven élite teams planning training and practice trips to the Region of Murcia during the first three months of the year, among them the Alinghi team which won the America’s Cup in 2003 and 2007.
The teams concerned are those of Alinghi, who will become the first to arrive this week, Zen, Zoulou, Yliam, Spinorift, Realteam and Artexplora, who are using the facilities at the Club Náutico marina in Lo Pagán and the Pinatar Arena arena in San Pedro del Pinatar and who are preparing for their participation in the TF35 Trophy regatta which is to be held later this year in Lake Geneva, on the border between France and Switzerland.
These latest prestigious visitors to the Mar Menor are following in the footsteps of the Ineos Team UK team, who came to the lagoon last year with team leader Sir Ben Ainslie as part of their preparations for the 2021 America’s Cup in New Zealand. The first of the 2020 teams to arrive will be Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi team.
