ARCHIVED - 60 arrested and 10 tonnes of hashish seized in huge Andalusian drug raid in Huelva, Seville and Cadiz
350 Guardia Civil officers have taken part in the operation, which included raids in Huelva, Cádiz and Seville.
Police swooped down on 25 different locations in the Andalusian provinces of Huelva, Sevilla and Cádiz this week as part of a massive operation that has been underway in southern Spain since March 2020.
This latest stage of the ongoing Guardia Civil operation involved raids on properties in El Rocío, Corrales, Almonte, Aljaraque, Gibraleón, San Juan del Puerto, Rociana, Villablanca, Lepe, Huelva city, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Mairena del Aljarage and Villamanrique de la Condesa, and has led to 60 arrests and the confiscation of 10 tonnes of hashish.
Operation ‘Soterrado’, as it was dubbed because the first stash of drugs was found buried underground, remains open and further raids and arrests have not been ruled out.
Southern Andalusia is a notorious entry point for hashish imported from Morocco, which in 2018 led the Spanish Interior Ministry to launch a special security plan to crack down on drug trafficking in the area. However, with huge gains possible there are always people ready to take the places of those arrested, especially in poverty-stricken areas with sky-high unemployment rates.
In 2019 alone, police seized almost 350 tonnes of hashish in Spain and arrested 20,437 people for drug trafficking, and although no official figures are available yet for last year, the Covid pandemic has done little, if anything, to slow traffickers down.
