ARCHIVED - 54 tons of illegal rolling tobacco and 35,000 packs of cigarettes confiscated in Murcia since 2017
1 in 12 of all cigarettes smoked in Spain has not been declared to customs authorities
This week the issue of cocaine trafficking has been front page news in Spain following the interception of a submarine carrying 3 tons of the drug from Colombia off the coast of Galicia, and at the same time the customs authorities, the Guardia Civil and the Policía Nacional are still battling to halt the smuggling of tobacco into the country as undeclared imports result in significant losses of government revenue through taxes.
In the Region of Murcia, according to Francisco Jiménez, the central government delegate to the Region, the authorities have seized a total of 54 tons of rolling tobacco in the last three years, while a new system to make cigarette packets traceable to source has resulted in approximately 35,000 packs being confiscated. Over the three years 2019 has already been the most productive in terms of illegal tobacco seized, with the figures reaching over 36 tons of rolling tobacco and 20,000 packs of cigarettes.
Other data mentioned by Sr Jiménez at an event organized by Philip Morris Spain included the fact that legal tobacco sales in Murcia in 2018 amounted to almost 164 tons of rolling tobacco and over 77 million packets of cigarettes. Across the country it is estimated that taxes have been evaded on around 1 in 12 of all cigarettes smoked, resulting in the government missing out on approximately 1,000 million euros of revenue every year.
