ARCHIVED - 35 illegal wells and 38 desalination stations raided in Murcia
107 people across Spain face charges for similar illegalities
A total of 107 people across Spain face charges after a Guardia Civil investigation in which over 1,400 illegal wells and water soundings were detected along with 47 water deposits in which agriculturalists were storing the water extracted from underground aquifers.
Among the unauthorized water infrastructures were 35 wells and 38 desalination plants in the Region of Murcia, where the existence and use of such equipment is held largely responsible for runoff water containing nutrients and fertilizers into the Mar Menor, and for the consequent deterioration of the marine environment of the lagoon.
The Guardia Civil investigation lasted for 5 months, during which time 1,800 inspections were carried out in order to establish offences against the environment and the natural resources of Spain. A total of 2,198 irregularities were found, and as well as those in the Region of Murcia the figure includes 28 excavations and 37 boreholes in the National Park of Doñana in the south-west of Spain and 77 wells in Lucena del Puerto in the province of Huelva.
