Number of cases reported in total:

Friday 25th September;Total cases to date 18,999 ( 3193 new cases in a week)

On Friday 16th October, the regional health authority reported 716 cases in one day, the highest daily figure of the pandemic to date in Murcia and the fruit of 5,859 PCR and antigen tests. This is a positive test rate of 12%, way above the 5% which indicates community transmission according to the WHO.
Of the new infections, 227 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 58 to Cartagena, 50 to Molina, 47 to Lorca, 45 to Totana, 22 to Torre Pacheco, 20 to Alcantarilla, 17 to Fortuna, 17 to Jumilla, 15 to San Javier, 14 to Cieza, 13 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 12 to Águilas, 12 to Archena, 12 to Santomera, 11 to Abanilla, 11 to Alhama de Murcia, 11 to Ceutí, 10 to Bullas, 9 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 9 to Mula, 8 to Yecla, 7 to Abarán, 6 to Beniel, 6 to Fuente Álamo, 5 to Mazarrón, 5 to San Pedro del Pinatar and the remainder are distributed amongst the other municipalities, albeit in smaller quantities.
These figures show that although the rate of the increase in the number of cases is slower than it was a month ago, this week there has been an acceleration in the upward motion of the total number of new cases being diagnosed once again and the number of active cases remains a lot higher than would have been expected following the reduction in the quarantine period to 10 days.
By municipality on Friday: Note, the first figure shown is the actual number of cases diagnosed in the last 7 days, the second is the IA rate for the last 7 days (number of cases per 100,000 of population): In brackets the number of cases is indicated as either a positive or negative compared to the situation last Friday when this breakdown was last published, taking into consideration that patients are recovering and being removed from the list all the time)
Abanilla 63/1028 (+24) ( This means 63 cases in the last week and an IA rate of 1028, so way above average, with 24 more cases since the last figures were published a week ago)

New national system of classification:
This week the national Ministry of Health has introduced a new four-tier system, the Plan de Respuesta Temprana, which is designed to pre-empt a significant problem occurring in any region of the country by monitoring a number of key criteria in an attempt to detect a surge in cases in any given area, hopefully preventing a repeat of the situation which occurred in Madrid last week when the national Government was compelled to intervene and impose a state of emergency in the Madrid Region.
The system monitors the accumulated incidence rate ( the rate per 100,000 of population over the periods of 7 and 14 days), positivity rate of PCR tests, the transmission rate, the incidence in the population aged over 65, the percentage of cases which are traceable, the percentage of hospital beds occupied by covid patients and the percentage of UCI beds ( NB; in this last figure the Ministry includes reanimation beds and beds allocated for surgery patients as well as dedicated UCI unit beds, as the aim is to assess the capacity of each region to cope with severe cases of covid).
Once having gathered this data, the Ministry calculates the risk level of each region, classifying each on a 1-4 basis, with 1 being low risk and 4 being extreme.
This week, Murcia was classified as being on level 3, ie high risk, the same level as Castilla la Mancha, Catalonia, Navarra and the Basque Country.
Aragón, Castilla y León, Madrid, La Rioja and Ceuta are all classified as extreme, on level 4.
The ultimate aim of the system is to create a standardised set of restrictions which will be applied to at risk areas once certain parameters are reached, attempting to avoid the mass confusion currently reigning in the UK with differing measures being applied all over the country and to apply preventative measures as required to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
