ARCHIVED - 27th February to 8th March, Plato de Cuchara traditional stews route in Murcia
A great chance to sample some of the unsung heroes of the gastronomy of the Costa Cálida!
“Plato de cuchara” is a term without an obvious translation into English but it refers to hot savoury dishes which must be eaten with a spoon (rather than a knife and fork), and these dishes have forged their own special place in the gastronomic tradition of the Region of Murcia and most of the rest of Spain.
They are not the most glamourous of dishes, but they tend to be extremely tasty and homely, associated with seasonal stews and thick flavoursome home-made soups – think lentils with vegetables and chorizo sausage, pork and vegetables or variations on the theme of the well-known “fabada” white bean stew with morcilla and chorizo from the northern region of Asturias, to name just a couple of examples – and this year, just as the winter season generally associated with these dishes is coming to an end, an event similar to a tapas route featuring “platos de cuchara” is being held in the city of Murcia from 27th February to 8th March.
The event is being held in the Santa Eulalia district in the centre of the city, with the participating establishments being Bar Ático, Cucú Gastrobar, El Garrampón, El Jardín de los Dragones (vegetarian food par excellence for veggies), La Bernarda, Los Manjares del Tío Simón, Macondo, María Antonieta, Pepita Pulgarcita, Por Herencia, Keki Tapería and Touché. Each of them is offering a dish of “guiso” (or stew) served from the pan for 3.50 euros including a tapa and a drink (beer, wine or soft drinks), and members of the public following the route will be invited to vote for their favourites.
A prize draw will be held for all of those whose Ruta de la Cuchara “passport” is stamped in at least ten of the establishments, and at the same time a selfie competition is being held with the hashtag #santaeulaliaesunaactitud on Instagram. The image receiving the most Likes will be the prize winner.
