ARCHIVED - 21st to 23rd February, cheese and honey market and tastings in the city of Murcia
A chance to sample and buy some of the most characteristic products of the Murcia countryside
Murcia has been named the Gastronomic Capital of Spain for 2020 and a host of related events are taking place in the city during the year, the latest of them being “La Huerta de los 1001 sabores: Sabor a Queso y Miel” in the Plaza Santo Domingo from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd February.
This event is in the format of an open-air market and will feature the three cheeses of the Region of Murcia which are protected by Denomination of Origin status: fresco, curado y “al vino”. Stands open on Friday from 19.30 to midnight, on Saturday from 11.30 to midnight and on Sunday from 11.30 to 16.00, giving members of the public plenty of time to taste some of the most characteristic flavours of the Region of Murcia.
Much of the cheese production of Murcia is centred on the far south and north of the Region, in the municipalities of Jumilla, Bullas, Yecla, Lorca, Cartagena, Calasparra, Águilas and Caravaca de la Cruz, where for centuries country folk have made their own homemade cheeses using the milk of the murciano-granadina breed of goat. These cheeses are now more refined and have become the three characteristic types featured in the Plaza Santo Domingo.
Alongside will be beekeepers and honey producers from all over the Region, offering the perfect counterpoint to the tang of the cheeses on offer!
The three main types of Murcia cheese are described as follows:
Fresco: unmatured, with a smooth milky taste
Curado: firm and compact after maturing for at least 120 days
Queso al Vino: matured for at least 45 days and surrounded by a rind made with wine belonging to the Denominations of Origin of Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas.
