The main parades in Totana this year are on 22nd and 29th February
This year there are more than 20 different activities under the umbrella of Totana Carnival, which lasts throughout February as the south-west of Murcia marks the start of Lent, 40 days before Easter.
The fiestas are organised by the Federación de Peñas de Carnaval and most of the events take place in the municipal park, where there is a large open air auditorium and plenty of space to mill around and enjoy the various entertainments on offer. A marquee will be set up in the park, and on the main days of the Carnival bars will be open in the marquee. (Click for map: Parque municipal Marcos Ortiz.)
There are two main parades, the first of which is on Saturday 22nd February and features the Totana peñas (participating troupes) only, while the second a week later on 29th February includes peñas invited from across the Region of Murcia, as well as the local peñas.
In addition, there is a children’s parade on 23rd February in the morning, with the rest of the day featuring plenty of entertainment for the younger generation.
The main acts of the 2020 Carnival program in Totana include:Saturday 8th February 202020:00 Pasacalles, an informal parade, with one of the musical charangas of the carnival, leaving from the Plaza de la Constitución and concluding in the marquee, which is then followed by the Pregón, opening speeches and gala.Tickets for the gala night are 10 euros and can be purchased from the La Cárcel cultural centre, from the town hall or from the federation of peñas.00:00 The FYV band in concert performing a tribute to the best of Spanish pop through the ages. This part of the evening is free entry and anyone can go in after the gala.Saturday 15th February 202011:30. Children’s make your own mask workshop in the federation of the carnival peñas.16.30. Children’s carnival parade in the outlying district of El Paretón. Departing from the Colegio Guadalentín and concluding in the Sala Polivalente. Followed by children’s carnival fiesta in the same venue.21.00: The third Totana drag queen competition in the Parque Marcos Ortíz, admission 10 euros. After the gala, further musical entertainment is provided by DJ Vallero (admission free of charge).Tickets are on sale in the La Cárcel cultural centre, from the town hall or from the federation of peñas.00:00. Free entry disco in the same venue.Sunday 16th February 202013.00: Carnival fancy dress competition for pets in the Parque Municipal Marcos Ortiz. Bring your pet along and participate! Registration for the competitions one hour in advance.Thursday 20th February 2020Parade for those with disabilities, operated in association with various centres of learning and associations.Saturday 22nd February 202016.30: Grand adult Carnival parade with the Totana peñas. This will follow a route via Avenida de Lorca, Sol, Plaza de la Constitución, Puente, San Antonio, Juan XXIII, Plaza Juan de la Cierva, Ángel de Novelé, Alberto Gray Peinado and Rambla de la Santa.Midnight: Carnival fiesta in the municipal marquee in the Parque Marcos- Ortíz.Sunday 23rd February 202011.30: Children’s Carnival parade, following Avenida de Lorca, Sol, Plaza de la Constitución, Puente, San Antonio, San Francisco de Asís and concluding in the recinto ferial (fairground).Tuesday 25th February 202020.30: Traditional masked ball, although in Totana it’s more of a gathering in the Plaza de la Constitución followed by an informal parade along the Calle San Cristóbal (the Street of Masks according to local tradition) to the Plaza de la Maderera.The full itinerary is Plaza de la Constitución, Puente, San Antonio, Ánimas, San Cristóbal, Avenida Santa Eulalia, Plaza Miguel Marín, Ramblica, Carrasco and Plaza de la Maderera, and the only requirements are that all those taking part should be wearing masks and fancy dress, and should be prepared to enjoy music, sandwiches and sangria!00:00. This is followed by a carnival fiesta in the Parque Marcos Ortíz which includes prizegiving for the shop window dressing competition and from the parade of Totana peñas.Saturday 29th February 202016.00: The Grand Carnival Parade of Totana featuring guest Peñas from throughout the Region of Murcia as well as the local peñas, followed by dancing and prize-giving at midnight.The parade will take the following route: Alberto Gray Peinado, Ángel de Novele, plaza Juan de la Cierva, Juan XXIII, San Antonio, Puente, Plaza de la Constitución and General Aznar.Midnight: Prize-giving and party in the Parque municipal Marcos Ortiz.Tickets for seats to watch the carnival parades in Totana cost 3 euros each and can be purchased in advance from the Juguetería and Hermanos Romero in Totana. Unsold seats can be purchased on the day for the seats installed in calle Puente and the centre of the town. All money raised is destined for the charity PADISITO.
