ARCHIVED - 11-billion-euro rescue package for tourism, hospitality and small businesses in Spain
With tough times still ahead, more than 300,000 self-employed workers across Spain fear they will have to close this year due to the pandemic
The Spanish government is to approve 11 billion euros to help businesses and self-employed workers in the tourism, hospitality and small business sectors, president Pedro Sánchez announced at a Plenary session of Congress on Wednesday (24 February).
With more hard times ahead, Sánchez said that the aid package will provide important support to these sectors, which have suffered heavy blows as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. According to recent data from the National Self-Employed Workers’ Association (ATA), a million self-employed people in Spain have reported losses of more than 30,000 euros and more than 300,000 of them fear they will have to close down their businesses this year. The president didn’t specify whether the funds will come in the form of direct aids like in France or Germany, or whether they will take the form of tax rebates, which appears to be the Spanish government’s preferred option.
Since the start of the pandemic, Sánchez said, 20 per cent of the GDP has been committed to providing what he referred to as "an exercise in protection never seen before.” Aid over the past year has come in the form of funding through ICO public guarantees, ERTE temporary redundancy schemes and transfers to the regions. ERTE salaries and benefits alone have accounted for about 40 billion euros in direct aid, the president pointed out. Another 24 billion euros were sent to the Spanish regions to reinforce health services and for the local authorities to inject where they considered it of the most use.
The Spanish president also referred to Covid-19 vaccinations, reporting that the government has bought 136 million doses from five pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Janssen and Curevac). Spain has also assigned 9.98 million euros to support vaccination research projects in the country, 4.47 million of that provided by the Centre for Development of Industrial Technology (CeDETI).
