ARCHIVED - Spanish airport manager Aena forced into borrowing to counter coronavirus losses
Aena, the company which manages airports across Spain and South America and holds a majority share in Luton, suffered heavy losses last year due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.
Aena, the Spanish airport management company, has announced that it has been forced to borrow 700 million euros as a result of the losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The company, which runs almost 50 airports in Spain as well as holding a majority stake in the concessionaire of Luton airport in London and multiple airports in South America, has signed loans with various lenders for periods ranging from two to five years.
The measure aims to reinforce Aena’s liquidity following a catastrophic year due to coronavirus and the restrictions it has caused.
The crisis has dealt the airline industry a particularly heavy blow. For example, the company’s airports registered just 2.23 million passengers in February, 86.8 per cent less than in February 2020 before the pandemic began, and by the end of March the overall traffic handled by the operator was 84 per cent down when compared to the first three months of 2019.
National and international air traffic remains at a minimum as many restrictions are still in place worldwide.
Last year was in fact Aena’s first year in the red since 2012, when it was 100 per cent publicly owned and not yet listed on the stock exchange. The company ended 2020 with a loss of 126.8 million euros and saw its revenue from January to December plummet 50.2 per cent year-on-year to 2,262.9 million euros and its gross operating profit (Ebitda) fall 74.2 per cent.
