ARCHIVED - Spain remains off-limits for German tourists as country lifts travel restrictions
Entry and quarantine restrictions currently prevent other EU nations and UK nationals from entering Spain other than for essential reasons
Germany is the second largest emissor of Spanish tourists behind the UK.
Last year 1.3 million Germans visited Spain during June, 1.25 million in July and 1.7 million in August.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has announced that the country plans to lift travel restrictions to 29 European countries from Wednesday although Schengen-area countries Spain and Norway will still be off-limits to Germans in the immediate future as both countries still have entry bans in place.
Germans will be able to travel to passport-free Schengen-area countries as well as the UK from June 15th onwards, although the minister warned that "Travel guidelines are not necessarily an invitation to travel," he said. "For example, we do not recommend non-essential travel to the UK while they have a 14-day quarantine period in place."
Today the UK announced that a two-week quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK would be enforced from 8th June, a move which is likely to deter foreign tourists from visiting the country. Further details will be announced in the next few hours.
"We must not let this lull us into a false sense of security," he said in a tweet, "COVID-19 is not over. We have to work together to make sure that the re-opening of tourism does not lead to a second wave, either here in Germany or elsewhere."
Travel to other countries at a later date will depend on the evolution of the Covid-crisis and changes in the legislation of other countries, including the easing or removal of entry bans and the minister indicated that Germany would wait for the EU to make announcements about the easing of travel outside of the EU before making any decisions.
