The Tuesday figures for the Murcia Region are a reflection of the high number of new cases reported last week
Hospitals in the Region of Murcia are now under significant pressure following an avalanche of new covid admissions in the last 24 hours.
137 patients have been admitted for hospital treatment in the last 24 hour period, taking the total number of patients now hospitalised with coronavirus to 852, the total in intensive care rising by 14 to 119.
The total number of patients has never been this high before, although the same level of admissions in intensive care was reached at the peak of the second wave in November on the 19th. The regional health service has now fully implemented its contingency plan and opened additional wards for covid patients in the principal hospitals. At the beginning of the week the regional health service said that it expected the number of patients hospitalised to reach 1,000 this week and the figures certainly seem to be heading that way.
New cases. The number of new cases was slightly lower today than towards the end of last week, 9,685 PCR tests yielding a positivity rate of almost 17% and 1635 new cases.
Of the 1,635 new cases, 546 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 221 to Cartagena, 105 to Lorca, 61 to Molina de Segura, 56 to Yecla, 52 to Cieza, 45 to Torre Pacheco, 43 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 36 to Mula , 33 to Alcantarilla, 30 to Mazarrón, 29 to Águilas, 29 to Moratalla, 25 to San Javier, 25 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 23 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 21 to Cehegín, 19 to Fuente Álamo, 19 to Jumilla, 18 Los Alcázares, 17 to Santomera, 15 to Alguazas, 15 to Totana, 14 to Bullas, 13 to Alhama de Murcia, 13 to La Unión, 12 to Archena, 11 to Puerto Lumbreras, 10 to Beniel, 10 to Calasparra, 9 to Abanilla, 9 to Ceutí, 9 to Fortuna, 7 to Abarán, and 7 to Blanca, with the remainder distributed in smaller quantities in the remaining municipalities of the region.
This brings the total of active cases in the region to 16,705 , the highest level to date.

Fatalities:
During the previous waves of the virus it has been normal for a high number of new case diagnoses to be followed by an increased level of hospitalisations and then more deaths. These are 8 men and 4 women, aged 61, 74, 86, 64, 75, 74, 91, 79, 90, 93, 81 and 87, three of them from 3 Cartagena, two from Lorca 2, and the rest from Murcia , Águilas Puerto Lumbreras, Fuente Álamo, Mazarrón, Torre Pacheco and Calasparra. Their deaths bring the total to date up to 845.
